If you are reading this blog you are probably a bride-to-be; so CONGRATULATIONS on your upcoming big day! I’m delighted that you want to be better prepared for your upcoming Hair & Makeup Trial Session. Here are the answers to a few common questions we receive about trials and some tips to make you a savvy bride (not that you aren’t already!).

So what exactly is a trial session and how is different from a consultation? Consultations allow you to meet your artist in person (or by phone/ video chat) before your wedding day to discuss your desired look. During a trial session, we start off with the consultation and then provide the exact services you can expect on your wedding day. It also helps to take away some of the stress from your wedding day as you know you’ll look every bit of perfect! So lets recap: Consultations- talking, no styling. Trial Session- the whole enchilada!

How much does all this cost? If you would like to try out our services before you book, hair & makeup trial sessions are $120 at our studio. If you would like us to travel to you for your trial, please add $40. If you secure our services for your wedding day along with your trial session, you’ll get the sweet rate of $99! We’ll even apply this rate to your engagement session and day after/trash the dress shoot!

When should I do my trial? We generally recommend waiting until you have all of your wedding accessories in hand, within 2 months of your wedding. This includes your veil (if you’ll be rocking one), hair accessories, jewelry, etc. If you plan on wearing fresh flowers in your hair the day of your wedding, we have an assortment of faux flowers to use as stand-ins. Waiting until the last few months to do your trial session is most beneficial (for most brides) because your hair length and your skin tone/texture will be similar. We also find that a lot of times when brides hold their trial sessions too early (6+ months before) they tend to change their style. We also like to encourage our brides to book their trial sessions on the day of one of their dress fittings. What better way to take in the whole picture, not to mention more bang for your buck, right?! While we do encourage doing your trial session closer to your wedding date, we’ll gladly schedule you whenever it works best for you!

I’m having a destination wedding and won’t arrive until a few days before the wedding. Will I have time for a trial? Yes! We have tons of destination brides every year. Sometimes, we dont have their trial session until the day before their big day! We recommend scheduling your trial session as soon as you decide you’ll be having one. Since you will be on tight schedule we want to make sure we can accomodate you! If your schedule just doesn’t allow you to make it to our studio before your big day, don’t fret, we offer Skype consultations too!

How long should I plan on being there? Up to 1 hour for a single service trial session. Which means you’ll only be getting your makeup done OR your hair done. Up to 2 hours for hair AND makeup.

Can I try out different looks? Yes, but please keep in mind that after 2 hours (or 1 hour if doing a single service trial) overage charges apply. Its best to do a little homework before you come in and search for inspiration photos. This will better help us create your perfect wedding day look. But you’re a savvy, prepared bride so you’ve already done that anyway =).

What should I bring? How should I arrive? Bring with you all the accessories that will be on your pretty little head =) Veil, earrings, clips, combs, etc. Bring in photos of looks that inspire you. Wear a white top with a similar neckline to your wedding dress. Have clean AND completely dry hair. If we have to dry your hair, it’ll take away from the time we have of styling it/ making minor tweaks/trying a different look. Please exfoliate your skin and lips the night before with a gentle exfoliant. Smoother skin leads to a better makeup finish. Freshly washed skin is also best. If you have a moisturizer you love, feel free to put that on as well. Please feel free to bring with you a friend or family member. This person should know (and respect!) your style well.

How many trials can I have? As many as you would like. Our clients usually only require one trial. Each will be charged separately at the same rate.

Can I have my trial session on the day of my engagement shoot? Yes, of coarse! We want you to get the most out of your experience with us! If you are planning on having a similar look for both days, awesome! If you are planning on 2 different looks, please refer back to the Can I try out different looks? section.

Do I have to keep the lashes? If you want to save them for your own personal (re)use, please do! We won’t ask you to give them back to us, YUCK! (we’re serious about getting asked this question!)

Things to keep in mind when looking for inspiration photos: Having reference photos helps to ensure you and the stylist (us!) are on the same page. Your idea of natural or smokey eye maybe different than ours. Look for styles of hair textures similar to yours. Sometimes there is a fine line between what you want and what is possible. If you have shoulder length, fine/thin hair, you will not be able to achieve long, voluminous waves/curls without the help of added hair extensions. When browsing for makeup inspiration photos chose someone who has a similar skin tone to yours. For example: I am half Asian/ half Caucasian + Native American with a tan complexion therefore, I should not use photos of Nicole Kidman as my inspiration. Jennifer Lopez or Jessica Alba would be better for me.

Other tips: Know your style or at least know what you DON’T like! Don’t be afraid to tell us what you really think! Our goal is to make you happy and look GLAM-azing! We promise that your honesty will not hurt our feelings.

I hope this post helped to make the whole process a lot less intimidating and more exciting! Please CONTACT US if there are any other questions we can answer for you or to schedule your trial session! Thanks for reading!

1. YSL Touche Eclat: this award-winning highlighting concealer makes dark circles, fine lines and signs of fatigue virtually disappear so you look rested and refreshed—even if you’ve been up for hours.

2. Makeup Forever Aqua Eyes: A highly pigmented, waterproof liner pencil that glides on like butta! The black is SUPER black!

3.Benefit Brow Zing: The kit comes with a brow wax, powder, mini tweezers, mini angle brush and mini blending brush. Your easiest way to perfect brows!

4. Tarte LipSurgence Lip Tint: I love both this version and the matte one, but the original Lip Tint variety leaves your lips feeling oh-so moisturized while giving you a sheer pop of color.

5. Face Atelier Ultra Loose Powder: is a micronized, double sifted powder that feels so beautiful on the skin. Reduces shine and minimizes pores all day!

1. Osis Dust it: A mattifying powder that gives lightweight texture and is AMAZING for fine hair. Sprinkle a little at the root + tease= major lift!

2. Tresemme Tres Two Ultra Fine Mist Hairspray: This lightweight flexible hairspray is a drugstore treasure!

3. Moroccan Oil Intense Hydrating Mask: Leaves hair super shiny while enhancing your color. It smells so delicious!

4. Enzo Milani Clipless Irons: You wont find better technology out there when it comes to curling irons than Enzo Milano. Once you get the hang of using the clipless design, you’ll be able to style your hair in record time!

5. Paul Mitchell The Detangler: Great for fine and color treated hair, this classic is unmatched in taming my natural dreads!

1. Bliss Oxygen Mask: A quick pick-me-up for dull, tired skin. This mask delivers oxygen, Vitamin C and antioxidants to your skin and it feels kinda cool when it starts to bubble and turn into foam on your face!

2. Philosphy Eye Hope: This multitasking eye cream helps to reduce the look of fine lines, dark cirles, puffiness and dehydration.

3. Amore Pacific Enzyme Peel: An exfoliant gentle enough for daily use. Leaves skin feeling silky smooth.

4. C.O. Bigelow My Favorite Night Balm: Not really a skin product, but close enough. This lip balm is a winner! I’ve never used another lip balm that works as well or as fast.

5. Makeup Forever Sens’Eyes: This incredibly gentle makeup remover tackles even the most stubborn waterproof formulas.
